Diary of An Afghan Woman

IMG 20210907 WA0000

Four women share with us their daily lives in Afghanistan. Join them as they express their love for the country, the people, and each other; and as they share with you their deepest fears and most intimate moments.

They refuse to be silenced as they journey through this new, uncharted chapter in Afghanistan's history.

We at TSOS are honored to provide a platform for their voices to be heard. We will post entries as we receive them. For safety purposes, names have been changed and only avatars (designed with input from each woman) will be used.

Tulips are native to Afghanistan and are considered their national flower. Despite not being comfortable in sharing her art, Noor drew this painting of tulips to share with you, one tulip for each of the women in her family still in Afghanistan...herself and her two sisters, her mother, and her grandmother.

Update 2026:

Noor is finishing her schooling in Russia, but the war in Ukraine has disrupted her studies. Zoya and her two other daughters had been living in Pakistan since 2021. Baran had a baby and her sister Hasti was finishing school. Zoya was diagnosed with kidney disease, which qualified them for asylum in the US. However, in 2024 the US government instituted a travel ban for all Afghans and their travel plans were blocked. They could not leave Pakistan. With tensions arising in Pakistan towards Afghan refugees, the family were forced to return to Afghanistan in early 2026.

They are currently in hiding.

What would you do if you had to leave everything behind?

By the end of 2025, more than 117.8 million people worldwide had been forcibly displaced by war, persecution, or human rights abuses — and 45 million of them are children.

They arrive in refugee camps and countries seeking safety and carrying little: legal papers, if they're lucky. A backpack. A child's hand in theirs.

What they carry that we can't see is heavier: fractured families, homes they'll never return to, professions they loved, friends and relatives they may never see again.

In a climate where immigrant stories are often ignored or twisted, we believe stories are a form of justice. When someone shares what they survived, they reclaim their voice. When we amplify it through film, photography, and advocacy, the world listens. Hearts soften. Policy begins to shift.

Because when a lawmaker sees a person instead of a statistic, and a neighbor understands instead of fears, rebuilding becomes possible.
